The HOB catches the big debris before it ever reaches the canister’s media, which means longer intervals between canister cleanings and a more stable cycle overall. It’s not overkill if the bioload justifies it — it’s just redundancy working in your favor.


Canister Filter Maintenance: How to Clean It Without Crashing Your Cycle
