Before you start diluting, dosing, or adding driftwood, ask yourself one question: do you actually need to change anything? Not every fish wants the same water. A target that’s perfect for a Discus could be borderline reckless for a livebearer, and chasing an arbitrary “ideal” number for fish that are already happy where they are is how people accidentally stress out a healthy tank.

Step-by-Step Guide: How I Soften My Tanks

Method 1: The 50/50 Dilution (easiest for everyone)

This is exactly how I maintain my 50-gallon community tank.

  1. Test your tap: My tap water usually comes out at 12 dGH.
  2. The Mix: During my weekly 20–25% water change, I mix 50% tap water with 50% Reverse Osmosis (RO) or distilled water in my bucket, bringing that replacement water down to about 6 dGH.

You don’t need 100% RO water to get results.
